I'd like to take the time to thank Mrs. Malcolm and the Primary Education Students at the Turks and Caicos Community College in Provo. They invited me to do a guest lecture on Children's Literature in the Primary Education Classroom. We had a great time. We discussed the power of children's literature, how to use it as a teaching tool, how to use children's literature to address difficult topics, how to use children's literature across the curriculum and a number of other topics. I was impressed by the enthusiams of the students and touched by their warmth...and of course the beautiful potluck that they put together! I hope to work with you again and look forward to working with you as collegues in the future! Add Comment This past Friday I made the trip to Providenciales to facilitate a workshop at the Cheshire Hall Medical Center. We had a fantastic group of participants that were fun to work with and were up for lively results based discussions. Unfortunetly, I have no pictures to share this time. Although I had my camera, I was so wrapped up in the workshop that I forgot to take it out and snap a few shots while the participants were working on their activities. Thanks again for the invitation InterHealth Canada! We look forward to future workshops! I would like to thank the InterHealth Canada for inviting us to conduct our first soft skills workshop in Grand Turk! Today we facilitated 'Reaching Your Potential as a Leader' with an enthusiastic set of participants at the Cockburn Town Medical Center. Here are a few pictures of the participants hard at work! Start School at 2 Study Urges 11/22/2011
School for little tots seems to be a hot topic these days, especially here in the TCI. With rumors floating about the perhaps cut of K1 and K2 in the government system, this article is very timely. Learning through play is essential for children. Not only is it fun, but it helps children reinforce their basic skills. The following game is one of my favorites and comes from Reading Games for Young Children by Jackie Silberg. This is a great game that encourages the development of sensory perception while reinforcing alphabet skills. Cut out some large letters from cardboard. Choose the letters that you would like to use. It is not necessary to use all 26 to begin with. Put the letters in a small box. A shoe box works perfectly. Have your child close their eyes or use a blindfold and have them pick out a letter from the box. The goals is for them to identify it by feeling the shape of the letter. I often reflect on how education has evolved. Education and what happens in the classroom has evolved so much since I was a student, and even since I have been a teacher. I am very lucky to have had a great base in Educational Technology, which allows me to embrace and learn more about technologies as they become available. This article, posted on BBC News, puts the spotlight on South Korea. South Korea, who is ranked 2nd in the world for reading, is aiming to be able to deliver all their curriculum materials through technology. As exciting as this sounds, there are many questions that come up when we move completely away from print. This article raises many of them and is worth a read .
