Often programs are followed in hopes of improving a child's basic understanding of mathematics. Making Math Lessons as Easy as 1, Pause, 2, Pause... was posted on NYTimes.com and is about the Singapore Math Program. This program was developed by parents who lived in Singapore with a young child and then moved back to the United States. When they were not satisfied with the text books being used in the US, they continued using the textbooks that their child had used while living in Singapore. Students in Singapore have repeatedly been at the top of international mathematics exams since the mid 90's. In an effort to bring some of this success to areas of the United States, schools are looking into the Singapore Math. Singapore Math is a slower paced program that focuses on covering less topics but promotes a deeper understanding of number and math concepts. Singapore math aims to ensure that children master the material through detailed instruction, questions, problem solving, and visual and hands-on aids like blocks, cards and bar charts.
