The first day of school will be here before you know it. Children have many different emotions that arise when they think of their first day of school. Some are excited, some are scared, some worry about who their teacher is going to be and some worry about whether they'll make friends. When I think of the first day of school, Judith Viorst's poem, The First Day of School, often comes to mind. It's a great poem that teachers may want to try using on the first day of school. You may even want to have your students write their own "what if" questions on the first day of school and then have them respond to them or write a journal entry about whether the 'what if's'' came true on the second day of school.
